New Delhi: New Delhi is under a red alert as a scorching heatwave grips the city, pushing temperatures to a sweltering 45°C (113°F). The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued the highest level warning, urging residents to take immediate action to protect themselves from the extreme heat.
Yesterday, temperatures soared across the capital, with Ayanagar recording a blistering 45.0°C, followed closely by Palam at 44.5°C. The city’s base station, Safdarjung, reached a scorching 43.3°C. These temperatures are significantly above normal, exceeding the seasonal average by three to four degrees.
The IMD warns that the severe heatwave conditions are expected to persist until June 12th. The red alert advises residents to: prioritize hydration, avoid direct sunlight, and minimize outdoor activities, particularly during the hottest hours of the afternoon.
“The intense heat is forecast to continue through Thursday,” stated Dr. Naresh Kumar, a senior IMD scientist. “However, a western disturbance is anticipated to impact northwest India starting the night of June 13th, potentially bringing light rain and thunderstorms to Delhi.” While humidity fluctuated between 31% and 73%, the dry, northwesterly winds intensified the heat’s impact, increasing discomfort for residents.
Thursday’s forecast predicts similar maximum temperatures (43-45°C) with gusty winds (40-60 kmph) and the possibility of light rain or thunderstorms later in the day.
Relief is on the horizon! The heatwave’s intensity is expected to subside from June 13th onwards, prompting a shift from a red to an orange alert. From June 14th to 17th, Delhi anticipates a welcome drop in temperatures to a range of 37-42°C, accompanied by light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds, offering a much-needed respite from the oppressive heat.
