New Delhi: Delhi Mayor Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh on Monday strongly rejected allegations made by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) accusing the civic administration of dumping debris at landfill sites, calling the claims “baseless, misleading and completely devoid of facts.”
Addressing the media, the Mayor said that during AAP’s long tenure in power, no concrete steps were taken to eliminate Delhi’s legacy landfill sites. “It was administrative failure and flawed policies that turned the national capital into a city of garbage mountains. Today, when visible results are being delivered, false narratives are being created to mislead the public,” he said.
39 Lakh Metric Tonnes of Waste Already Cleared
The Mayor said bio-mining and remediation work at legacy landfill sites is progressing at an unprecedented pace. At Bhalswa, Okhla and Ghazipur landfills alone, over 3.9 million metric tonnes of waste have already been scientifically processed.
He added that Delhi’s bio-mining capacity has been scaled up significantly, with daily processing now touching 30,000 tonnes per day (TPD)—dramatically accelerating the removal of decades-old garbage heaps.
Waste-to-Energy Push and New Facilities
Highlighting long-term waste management solutions, the Mayor said the foundation stone has been laid for a 3,000 TPD state-of-the-art waste-to-energy plant at Narela-Bawana. In addition, the Okhla waste-to-energy facility has been expanded from 1,950 TPD to 2,950 TPD, adding an extra 1,000 TPD capacity.
Further, tenders have been floated for 5,100 TPD of fresh waste processing infrastructure, including:
- 1,800 TPD at Bhalswa
- 700 TPD at Shingola
- 1,400 TPD at Okhla
- 1,200 TPD at Bawana
Once these facilities become operational, the Mayor said, fresh dumping at landfill sites will completely stop.
‘Results on Ground, Not Just Announcements’
Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh said these structured and time-bound initiatives will significantly speed up Delhi’s landfill elimination drive. “This is not just about environmental protection—it is about ensuring a cleaner, healthier and better quality of life for Delhi’s residents,” he said.
Taking a direct swipe at AAP, the Mayor said the party has no performance record to showcase and is resorting to “hollow allegations” to divert public attention. “Delhi’s citizens are aware of who merely makes claims and who is delivering results on the ground,” he added.
