New Delhi: Delhi Police have arrested a man accused of allegedly murdering his wife in Shahdara, claiming that he was inspired by the Hollywood series The Staircase and believed he could evade arrest by concealing the murder weapon.
Addressing a press conference, Joint Commissioner of Police (Northern Range) Ajit Kumar Singla said the case came to light on July 30 after the couple’s son called the police control room, informing officers that his father had killed his mother.
During the investigation, police found that the couple had been involved in frequent disputes over property. According to the family’s statement, the argument escalated after their son left for tuition on the day of the incident.
Police said the accused, a qualified engineer who had previously worked with a software company, allegedly drew inspiration from the Hollywood crime drama The Staircase. Investigators said he believed that disposing of the weapon used in the crime would make it difficult for police to solve the case.
During the investigation, officers recovered a pair of scissors that was allegedly placed in the victim’s hand in an apparent attempt to mislead investigators into believing a different sequence of events, police said.
The accused fled Delhi after the incident. Using technical surveillance and electronic tracking, investigators traced his movements through multiple locations before arresting him near Mathura Railway Station.
Delhi Police also recovered ₹12.75 lakh in cash and a scooter from the accused during the operation.
Police said the investigation is continuing to establish the complete sequence of events and gather further evidence in the case.
