Delhi Police to Implement Facial Sketch-Matching Technology for Enhanced Suspect Identification

Date:

New Delhi: The Delhi Police are set to introduce an innovative ‘reverse image search’ software designed to match suspect sketches with a comprehensive database of criminal photographs. This advancement promises to significantly streamline the process of identifying accused individuals, as confirmed by an official on Monday.

Developed by the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, this image reconstruction software will empower law enforcement agencies to swiftly correlate facial sketches derived from eyewitness accounts with digital images stored in police records.

“Previously, such comparisons were conducted manually, a process that was not only time-consuming but also prone to inaccuracies. This new software automates the procedure, enhancing the precision of suspect identification,” a police source explained.

Utilizing machine learning algorithms, the system processes sketches, filters through extensive visual data, and generates a shortlist of matching images from a central database. Investigators will be able to upload suspect sketches and receive near-instantaneous matches, greatly expediting their investigative efforts.

According to police officials, this technology is particularly beneficial in serious cases such as murder, robbery, and assault, where the only available evidence may be a sketch based on a victim or witness’s recollection. It also proves invaluable in situations where no direct images or CCTV footage of the suspect exist.

“This tool could be a game changer in solving cases with limited leads,” emphasized the officer.

Furthermore, police officials noted that these advanced technologies are already demonstrating their effectiveness in addressing complex cyber and physical crimes. The Delhi Police are currently employing a range of forensic and data recovery tools, including software designed to retrieve data from corrupted storage devices and mobile phones, enhancing their overall investigative capabilities.
