Pravesh Wahi Pushes Waste Segregation at Home to Reduce Delhi’s Landfill Burden

Date:

Delhi: Separating household waste before it enters the collection system is central to reducing the amount sent to Delhi’s landfills, Mayor Pravesh Wahi said during a door-to-door awareness drive in Prashant Vihar, where around 70 dustbins were distributed to residents.

Visiting homes in the north-west Delhi locality under the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan, Wahi explained how residents could segregate their daily waste and said similar outreach would be undertaken in every area to encourage households to adopt the practice.

The Mayor urged residents to put wet waste in green bins and dry waste in blue bins. Separating waste at its source makes recycling easier and helps divert waste from landfill sites, he said.

Residents were also introduced to the “4 Rs” of waste recycling as part of the awareness programme.

Wahi appreciated households already separating their waste and said individual participation was essential to improving Delhi’s cleanliness. If citizens fulfilled their responsibilities towards sanitation, the city could become cleaner much faster, he said.

The door-to-door exercise sought to connect the Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s sanitation efforts with the daily practices of residents. Wahi said strengthening the civic body’s sanitation arrangements must go alongside public awareness and greater community participation.

He said the MCD was working under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the leadership of Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to make the capital cleaner and improve its surroundings.

“The goal of a clean, beautiful and waste-free Delhi can be realised only when elected representatives, officials, sanitation workers and citizens fulfil their responsibilities together,” Wahi said.

He appealed to residents to cooperate with the civic body, dispose of waste only at designated places and actively help keep public spaces clean.

Resident welfare association office-bearers, BJP mandal workers and MCD employees participated in the programme.
