Delhi Govt Approves ₹1,000 Crore Yamuna Cleanup and Water Infrastructure Push; Rekha Gupta Says Mission Gains Momentum

Date:

New Delhi, May 25: The Delhi government has announced a major push towards strengthening the capital’s water and sewer infrastructure, approving projects worth more than ₹1,000 crore under the “Mission Clean Yamuna” initiative.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta shared details of the projects on X and said the mission to restore the Yamuna River has gained fresh momentum with new investments in water management and sewerage infrastructure.

“Yamuna will be restored to its pristine glory. With ₹1000+ crore worth of new water and sewerage projects, Mission Clean Yamuna has gained fresh momentum. Together with the Central Government, Delhi is moving ahead in mission mode towards a cleaner Yamuna and a Viksit Delhi,” the Chief Minister stated.

As part of the infrastructure expansion, the Delhi government has approved a ₹57 crore project in Trilokpuri for rehabilitation of an ageing trunk sewer line aimed at improving sewer connectivity and reducing leakages.

In Shahdara, a ₹27 crore project has been sanctioned for the development of an underground reservoir and booster pumping station to strengthen water supply infrastructure in the area.

The government has also announced major upgrades at the Keshopur Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) under Phase-1 works. The project involves an investment of ₹122 crore and will increase treatment capacity from 12 MGD to 18 MGD. Officials said the upgrade is expected to improve sewage treatment efficiency and strengthen overall water management systems in Delhi.

In another significant development, 12 new Decentralised Sewage Treatment Plants (DSTPs) will be established in Najafgarh with support from the Central Government. The project, worth ₹860 crore, is expected to benefit more than seven lakh residents and help reduce sewage pollution flowing into the Yamuna.

The Delhi government also highlighted plans to promote rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge and modernisation of sewer infrastructure as part of its broader strategy for long-term water security in the national capital.

Officials said the integrated projects are aimed at improving sewage treatment, reducing pollution load in the Yamuna River and building a stronger water management network across Delhi.

The government stated that the latest projects mark another major step towards achieving a cleaner Yamuna and creating sustainable urban infrastructure under the vision of a “Viksit Delhi.”
