Delhi Police Secures Robbery Conviction in Just 18 Days Under New Criminal Laws

New Delhi: In a major demonstration of the effectiveness of India’s new criminal laws under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Delhi Police’s Outer North District has secured a robbery conviction in just 18 days from the date of offence, marking one of the fastest convictions in a street crime case in the district.

The case, registered at Shahbad Dairy Police Station, involved the robbery of an iPhone 15 from a 21-year-old woman near Prahladpur Bus Stand on the evening of April 18, 2026.

According to Delhi Police, the accused assaulted the victim and forcibly snatched her mobile phone before attempting to flee. However, beat officer HC Vikram, who was patrolling nearby, immediately responded to the victim’s cries for help and chased the accused along with the complainant.

The accused, identified as Pankaj (22), son of Monu, was apprehended near Jain Colony Gate No. 3 within minutes, and the stolen iPhone was recovered from his possession.

Based on the victim’s statement, FIR No. 217/26 was registered under Sections 309(4) and 317(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Record-Speed Investigation and Trial

Police said the investigation was completed within 72 hours, while the chargesheet was filed within five days.

The case was fast-tracked under the supervision of DCP Outer North Hareshwar Swami, IPS, as part of a focused drive to ensure speedy prosecution of street crime cases.

Court Convicts Accused

The trial was conducted on a day-to-day basis by the court of Ms. Bharti Beniwal, JMFC-05, Rohini Courts.

On May 6, the court convicted the accused under Sections 309(6) and 317(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Delhi Police said the court appreciated the professionalism of the investigating team and specifically commended the quality of evidence collection and prompt investigation.

Police Team Recognised

The operation and investigation were led by: Insp. Rajesh Malik (SHO, Shahbad Dairy), Under supervision of ACP Joginder Singh (Bawana) and Investigation team including SI Satish, HC Vikram and Ct. Vipin Kumar.

Officials said the team would be suitably rewarded for their exemplary work.

Delhi Police described the conviction as a strong example of the emerging framework of “speedy investigation, speedy trial and speedy justice” under the new criminal law regime.
