Delhi Police ASI Arrested for Bribery in Case Tampering

Date:

New Delhi: An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) with the Delhi Police has been arrested by the vigilance unit for allegedly accepting a bribe to manipulate a criminal case. ASI Sushil Sharma, stationed at the Govindpuri Police Station, is accused of demanding money to remove family members implicated in an assault investigation.

Sharma was apprehended along with a local tea vendor, identified as his intermediary in the bribery scheme, according to a police statement released Wednesday.

The complainant, a daily wage laborer from Govindpuri, had previously paid Sharma ₹5,000 in connection with the assault case involving his family. However, the ASI allegedly demanded an additional ₹5,000 to expunge their names from the official investigation.

“Faced with this further extortion, the complainant bravely approached the vigilance unit,” the statement explained.

A sting operation was subsequently launched. Following Sharma’s instructions, the complainant delivered the bribe to the tea vendor near the police station.

The vendor then allegedly transferred the marked currency to Sharma within the police station itself. The vigilance team, monitoring the entire transaction, immediately apprehended both the ASI and the tea vendor.

The police statement confirmed that the bribe money was recovered directly from Sharma’s possession.
