‘No House Will Be Touched’ Promise Broken? Bulldozers Mark 273 Homes in Shalimar Bagh

Date:

New Delhi: Tensions have escalated in Shalimar Bagh Assembly constituency after government officials reportedly marked nearly 273 residential houses for demolition, triggering widespread anger and fear among local residents. The constituency is represented by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, making the proposed action politically sensitive.

According to residents, officials including the SDM, patwari and revenue staff visited the area over the past two days and marked houses for demolition, citing a road-widening project as the reason. Many of the homes are over 40–50 years old, with families claiming they have invested their life savings into permanent constructions.

Residents Cry Betrayal

Local residents allege that during the election campaign, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had assured them that no house would be demolished. However, the sudden marking of homes has led to accusations of betrayal and broken promises.

Several residents claimed they have been unable to meet or speak to the Chief Minister or her office despite repeated attempts. “She came here asking for votes, but now refuses to meet us,” a resident said.

Adding to the controversy, residents alleged that the Chief Minister’s husband made a remark suggesting the demolitions would go ahead, further inflaming public anger.

‘We Don’t Want Compensation, We Want Our Homes’

Families living in the marked houses said three to six families reside in each building, meaning hundreds could be displaced. Residents unanimously stated they do not want compensation, but want their homes to be protected.

“Officials just came, marked the houses and left. No notice, no explanation, no dialogue,” residents said, questioning the need for road widening when an existing road is already in place.

Heavy Police Presence, Restricted Access

Residents also alleged that police restricted their movement while they tried to approach the Chief Minister. They further claimed that Rekha Gupta skipped a local club house inauguration event and exited through a back gate to avoid interaction.

Administration Defends Action

The administration has maintained that the markings are part of a road-widening initiative, but has so far failed to provide clarity on rehabilitation, timelines or legal notices, deepening public anxiety.

Growing Political Flashpoint

The situation has now turned into a major political flashpoint, with residents accusing the government of acting without transparency or consent. Protests are expected to intensify unless the Chief Minister personally intervenes and clarifies the government’s stand.
