New Delhi: The Delhi Government has notified a compensation scheme providing financial assistance of up to ₹7.5 lakh to the families of prisoners who die unnatural deaths in Delhi’s jails.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) Delhi, the scheme provides ₹7.5 lakh as compensation in cases where a prisoner’s death occurs due to conflicts among inmates or alleged assault by jail staff.
In cases where a prisoner’s death is attributed to negligence or suicide, the family will be eligible for ₹5 lakh in financial assistance.
The government clarified that the scheme will not apply to deaths resulting from natural causes or illness.
The Delhi Government said the initiative is aimed at strengthening transparency and accountability in prison administration while upholding human dignity and the rule of law within the jail system.
The announcement was made by the Chief Minister’s Office through a post on X.
