New Delhi: The nomination process for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) concluded today, with candidates from the BJP and Congress filing their papers, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) stayed out of the mayoral contest.

On behalf of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Pravesh Wahi, Councillor from Ward 53 (Rohini-East) and former Leader of the House, filed his nomination for the Mayor’s post. Monika Pant, Councillor from Ward 206 (Anand Vihar), filed her nomination for Deputy Mayor.

From the Congress party, Zarif (Ward 234) filed nomination for Mayor, while Rajesh Kumar Gupta (Ward 39) filed for Deputy Mayor. Notably, the AAP did not field any candidates for either of the two key civic posts.

The filing of nominations was attended by outgoing Mayor Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh and Standing Committee Chairperson Satya Sharma, along with senior BJP leaders.

For the vacant seats in the MCD Standing Committee, BJP nominated Jai Bhagwan Yadav (Ward 27, Begampur), who is also the Deputy Mayor, and Manish Chaddha (Ward 82), Chairman of the Public Health Committee. On the other hand, AAP’s Jalaj Kumar (Ward 55) filed nomination for one of the vacant Standing Committee seats.

The elections for Mayor and Deputy Mayor are scheduled to take place during the MCD House meeting on April 29, 2026.

Focus on Clean Delhi, Women Empowerment
Speaking after filing his nomination, Pravesh Wahi said that eliminating garbage dumps across Delhi would be his top priority. He also promised pothole-free roads and better maintenance of parks to enhance the city’s overall infrastructure and aesthetics.

He emphasised that the BJP would work in coordination with the Delhi government to make the city clean, hygienic, and beautiful.

Deputy Mayor candidate Monika Pant highlighted the party’s commitment to women empowerment, stating that the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’ is not just a slogan but a pledge, and her candidature reflects BJP’s dedication to ensuring greater participation of women in governance.
