NEW DELHI: A scooter rider’s sudden U-turn on spotting a uniformed police officer led to the recovery of 200 quarter bottles of illicit liquor in Shahbad Dairy, Delhi Police said. The rider, identified as 27-year-old Lalit, was arrested and the scooter allegedly used to transport the liquor was seized.
According to the Outer North District’s press release, the incident occurred on October 7 while Shahbad Dairy police personnel were patrolling near Ambedkar Chowk. They noticed a scooter carrying a temporary red number plate, DL08A0004TC. On seeing the officer, its rider turned back towards Sector 28, Upwan Apartment, raising suspicion.
The police team followed the scooter and intercepted it near Ambedkar Chowk in Prakash Vihar. Officers found a black bag between the rider’s legs containing 150 quarter bottles, police said. A further search yielded another 50 quarters from the scooter’s storage compartment.
Police said the rider could not satisfactorily explain the bag or his conduct. FIR No. 647/2026 was registered at Shahbad Dairy police station under Sections 33 and 58 of the Delhi Excise Act. The liquor was seized and Lalit was arrested.
Lalit lives in Narela and is a permanent resident of Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan, according to police. The operation was led by Inspector Surender Singh, SHO of Shahbad Dairy, with Head Constable Ajay and Constable Govind.
Investigators are working to trace where the liquor was procured, identify others involved in its supply and transportation, and establish the alleged supply network across the Haryana–Delhi border.
