New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Tuesday began the trial operation of vacuum-based, battery-operated litter picker machines in eight wards of its Central North Zone (Keshav Puram Zone).
The machines were inaugurated by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on October 17. The MCD plans to deploy 1,000 such machines across the city, four in each of its 250 wards.
How the machines work
Each machine has a suction hose that picks up light litter such as plastic bottles, paper cups, wrappers and leaves. The machines are meant for cleaning markets, public places, narrow lanes and busy commercial areas, especially spots that large mechanised road-sweeping machines cannot easily reach.
The MCD said the trial would help strengthen localised cleanliness efforts and make litter collection more efficient in congested areas.
