Ahead of Monsoon, MCD Commissioner Orders Intensive Drain Cleaning, Desilting Drive to Prevent Waterlogging in South Delhi

Date:

New Delhi, July 7: With the monsoon season approaching, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar has directed officials to launch an intensive sanitation and drain-cleaning drive across South Delhi, stressing that drains must remain free from obstructions to ensure smooth rainwater flow and prevent waterlogging.

The directions were issued during an extensive field inspection covering Katwaria Sarai Dhalao, Ber Sarai, Deer Park Dhalao and the ongoing construction of the Convenience Centre at Ekta Camp.

The inspection was attended by Engineer-in-Chief P.C. Meena, South Zone Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kumar, senior engineering officers, sanitation officials and zonal field teams.

Focus on Monsoon Preparedness

Reviewing the city’s preparedness for the rainy season, the Commissioner inspected roadside drains and drain slabs and instructed engineering and sanitation teams to undertake timely desilting and thorough cleaning of all drains.

He directed officials to remove silt, debris and all forms of obstruction so that rainwater can flow without interruption, thereby reducing the risk of flooding and waterlogging during heavy rainfall.

Intensive Sanitation Drive Ordered

The Commissioner also reviewed sanitation conditions at several locations and instructed officials to launch a deep-cleaning campaign in the inspected areas.

He directed field teams to deploy adequate manpower and machinery to ensure:

  • Regular cleaning of public areas
  • Timely lifting of garbage
  • Improved sanitation standards
  • Continuous monitoring of cleanliness

Strengthening Waste Management

To improve waste collection and disposal systems, the Commissioner directed officials to establish two Fixed Compactor Transfer Stations (FCTS) each at Katwaria Sarai Dhalao and Deer Park Dhalao.

According to MCD, these facilities will improve operational efficiency and strengthen the city’s waste management infrastructure.

Civic Amenities at Ekta Camp

During the visit, the Commissioner also reviewed the progress of the Convenience Centre being constructed at Ekta Camp.

Officials informed him that the facility is being built over an area of approximately 150 square yards and will provide essential public amenities, including:

  • Public toilets
  • Bathing facilities
  • Laundry stations

The project is expected to significantly improve civic amenities for local residents and daily users of the area.

Commissioner Calls for Coordinated Action

Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar said the MCD’s priority is to strengthen sanitation systems, keep drains free from obstructions, and improve civic infrastructure before the onset of heavy rains.

He directed all departments to work in close coordination, deploy adequate resources and ensure visible improvements within fixed timelines.

The Commissioner also instructed officials to closely monitor the progress of the Ekta Camp project and ensure that construction is completed within the stipulated schedule while maintaining prescribed quality standards.
