NDMC issues 60 waste-segregation notices in five residential colonies

Date:

New Delhi: The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) said it issued 60 notices over the last two days to households in five residential colonies that were not separating waste at source. The action is part of its ongoing enforcement drive to ensure household waste is segregated before collection.

The colonies are West Kidwai Nagar, Laxmi Bai Nagar, Chanakya Rail Enclave in Chanakyapuri, Sarojini Vihar, and the Central Government Employees Residential Complex on BKS Marg. NDMC said residents of these colonies include senior IPS, IRS and Railway officers, other Central Government officials and its own officers.

The council said compliance with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, is mandatory regardless of a resident’s designation, rank or status. Its accompanying waste-segregation guidance identifies four separate streams: wet, dry, sanitary and special-care waste.

Wet waste goes in the green bin. The guidance includes kitchen scraps, food, vegetable and meat waste, fruit peels and flower waste in this stream.

Dry waste belongs in the blue bin. Examples include paper and cardboard, plastic bottles and packaging, metal cans, wood, rubber, glass bottles and tetra packs.

The red bin is for sanitary waste, including used diapers, sanitary pads, tampons, condoms, cotton and bandages. These are listed separately from the wet and dry streams.

Special-care waste is assigned to the black bin. It includes discarded paint drums and pesticide cans, bulbs, tube lights and fluorescent lamps, expired medicines, broken thermometers, batteries, and used needles or syringes. NDMC urged residents to follow the prescribed segregation requirements.
