Delhi Police Says Dipke Told of Grandmother’s Death, Offered Help to Travel Home

Date:

New Delhi: Delhi Police said it promptly informed detained Abhijeet Dipke of his grandmother’s death and offered assistance for travel to his hometown, responding to social-media claims that the news had been withheld from him.

Police said the information was conveyed with due sensitivity. Dipke was also told the scheduled funeral time and offered all possible help to facilitate the journey on humanitarian grounds.

The clarification came after several social-media accounts claimed that Dipke had not been informed of the death while in detention. Police rejected that claim in its statement.

Dipke’s detention came ahead of the proposed Jantar Mantar protest. Read our earlier report on his detention and the video plan for CJP’s stand-in leader, and the report on police denying permission for the demonstration.
