New Delhi, July 24: Delhi Police has rejected claims that Facial Recognition System (FRS) cameras installed around Jantar Mantar are being used to monitor protesters, stating that the cameras have been deployed solely for security and law-and-order purposes.
According to Delhi Police sources, the cameras have been installed at various locations in New Delhi district in view of the prevailing law and order situation to prevent anti-social elements, criminals and wanted offenders from entering the protest site at Jantar Mantar.
The sources said Delhi Police has previously deployed FRS cameras during major events in the national capital, including Republic Day, Independence Day, Holi, Diwali, Eid and Ramlila, as part of security arrangements.
The police described as “completely false” allegations that the cameras were installed to spy on protesters participating in demonstrations at Jantar Mantar.
According to the sources, Delhi Police and central agencies have also received intelligence inputs suggesting that cross-border terrorist organisations are monitoring the student protests and are allegedly conspiring to disrupt the national atmosphere.
