Delhi Crime Branch Busts Interstate Mobile Theft Gang Targeting IPL Matches; Four Arrested, 15 Stolen Phones Recovered

Date:

New Delhi, May 29: The Delhi Crime Branch has busted an organised interstate mobile theft gang that allegedly targeted spectators attending Indian Premier League (IPL) matches across multiple cities, leading to the arrest of four accused persons and the recovery of 15 stolen premium mobile phones.

According to officials, the operation was carried out by the ER-1 unit of the Crime Branch, which unearthed a well-organised network involved in stealing expensive mobile phones from crowded cricket stadiums during IPL matches.

Investigators said the gang allegedly travelled to various IPL venues, including Chandigarh, Mohali and Dharamshala, specifically targeting spectators amid large crowds. The accused are suspected of exploiting the rush and excitement during matches to steal high-value smartphones from unsuspecting fans.

During the operation, Crime Branch personnel arrested four members of the gang and recovered 15 premium mobile phones believed to have been stolen from IPL spectators. A Kia Carens vehicle allegedly used by the accused for transportation and movement between venues was also seized.

Police said several of the recovered mobile phones have already been linked to theft cases reported during IPL matches held in Dharamshala and Mohali, providing crucial evidence in the investigation.

The breakthrough is being viewed as a significant success in tackling organised theft targeting large sporting events and public gatherings.

The operation was led by Inspector Gurmeet Singh under the supervision of ACP Sunil Srivastava, with overall guidance from DCP Sanjeev Kumar Yadav.

Further investigation is underway to determine whether the gang was involved in similar thefts at other sporting events and public gatherings across the country.
