Delhi CM Announces Major Boost for MCD: 1,000 Litter Pickers, 70 Road Sweepers, ₹800 Crore Additional Support, Says Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh

Date:

New Delhi: In a significant push to strengthen civic services in the national capital, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced major financial and infrastructure support for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), including the deployment of 1,000 litter pickers and 70 new mechanical road sweeping machines, Mayor Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh said on Monday.

Addressing the media, the Mayor said the Chief Minister praised the performance of the MCD and announced an additional ₹500 crore grant for the civic body, along with ₹300 crore more to further reinforce civic services, taking the total additional support to ₹800 crore.

Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh strongly rejected allegations made by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) against MCD officials and the civic administration, calling them baseless, misleading and politically motivated. He said statements claiming a “collapsed governance system” were entirely fabricated and aimed at diverting attention from AAP’s own administrative failures.

Clarifying the governance framework, the Mayor said the MCD is functioning in full coordination with the Delhi Government under the guidance of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. During a recent review meeting, the Chief Minister acknowledged the progress made by the civic body and assured continued financial and administrative support to improve public amenities across Delhi.

Highlighting key infrastructure initiatives, the Mayor said the foundation stone for a 3,000 TPD Waste-to-Energy plant at Narela–Bawana has been laid. He added that expansion work has begun to increase the capacity of the Okhla Waste-to-Energy plant from 1,950 TPD to 2,950 TPD. In addition, major green-energy projects such as a 200 TPD biogas plant at Nangli Dairy and a 100 TPD CBG plant at Ghogha Dairy have already been inaugurated. Tenders have also been issued for 5,100 TPD fresh waste processing plants on reclaimed landfill sites.

Under the SUNIYO property tax scheme, the MCD has collected ₹519.05 crore from 1.18 lakh taxpayers, including 38,800 new taxpayers, the Mayor said. Several multi-level parking facilities have also been completed and opened to the public, with more projects in the pipeline.

The Mayor said these initiatives reflect the BJP-led administration’s commitment to strong governance and improved civic services. He reiterated that the MCD is working with renewed efficiency and focus, with solid waste management reforms, expansion of mechanised sweeping, park development and winter pollution control measures progressing on schedule.

“Claims of administrative failure are completely unfounded,” Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh asserted, adding that the civic body remains committed to delivering cleaner, more efficient and citizen-centric urban governance.
