New Delhi: Delhi Police has rejected a social-media claim alleging police firing at a Rahul Gandhi protest rally, describing it as a rumour and warning of legal action against the handle that circulated it.
In its October 12 fact-check, the force identified the account as @indiantiwari01 and urged people not to believe or amplify the claim.
Police warns against spreading the claim
The screenshot attached to the police statement contained allegations that police had fired at the rally and that workers had died. Delhi Police’s response called the claim a rumour.
The force also alleged that the handle had a documented history of circulating doctored media, old footage and fabricated narratives to mislead the public.
Delhi Police said spreading malicious rumours on social media was punishable and that strict legal action would be initiated against the handle. Its statement announced intended action; it did not report an arrest or identify a registered case.
