Kejriwal Says Police Released Him After Detention, Vows to Continue Protest

Date:

New Delhi: AAP national convenor and former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said police had released him on Saturday evening after his detention ahead of the planned Jantar Mantar protest.

“The police have released us. The fight will continue,” Kejriwal wrote in a Hindi post at 8:16 pm. He reiterated his demand for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation and called for an end to what he described as “vote theft”.

His release announcement followed former Delhi chief minister Atishi’s report of his detention outside his Lodhi Estate residence while heading to the demonstration. She shared a video of him amid a crowd and accused Delhi Police of treating him brutally.

Atishi also questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the police action, asking how many people would be put behind bars to protect Kumar. Kejriwal’s evening announcement updates the earlier account of his detention.

The protest centred on demands for Kumar’s resignation over allegations concerning electoral rolls. The Election Commission has rejected allegations of politically motivated manipulation.

Earlier, Cockroach Janta Party said Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka had been detained after arriving at Delhi airport. Its pre-recorded message named Ajinkya Shinde to lead the protest.

Delhi Police had refused permission for the October 10 gathering. Its letter cited the required advance application period, alleged violations of earlier conditions and concerns over public order and traffic.
