MCD Cracks Down on Poor Sanitation Ahead of Monsoon, Mayor Warns Officials and Private Agencies

Date:

New Delhi: With the monsoon season approaching and civic complaints over garbage and waterlogging rising across the capital, Delhi Mayor Parvesh Wahi has directed all zonal deputy commissioners to strengthen sanitation and drainage management on a war footing, warning that negligence in cleanliness will invite accountability.

During a high-level review meeting with all zonal deputy commissioners, the Mayor stressed that maintaining cleanliness across Delhi must become the top operational priority of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

Taking a tough stand on poor waste management, the Mayor instructed officials to fix responsibility on private garbage collection agencies wherever sanitation standards are found lacking. He also directed zones to identify “vulnerable points” prone to garbage accumulation and launch regular as well as special cleaning drives in such areas.

In a move aimed at improving field-level monitoring, sanitary supervisors (SS) and assistant sanitary inspectors (ASI) have been asked to remain actively present on the ground and ensure visible improvement in cleanliness operations.

The Mayor also announced an incentive-based initiative under which sanitation workers delivering exceptional performance will be rewarded. Officials said the step is intended to boost morale among frontline workers and improve efficiency in civic cleaning operations.

To improve discipline and visibility, sanitation workers have additionally been directed to wear uniforms while on duty.

The meeting also focused heavily on monsoon preparedness, especially drain desilting and prevention of waterlogging. The Mayor instructed officials to coordinate with agencies including the PWD and Delhi Jal Board to ensure drain cleaning works are completed on priority before heavy rains intensify.

Alongside sanitation concerns, the Mayor ordered strict action against encroachments, illegal meat shops, and unauthorised dairies, directing officials to work in coordination with Delhi Police for enforcement drives.

Mayor Parvesh Wahi said the MCD is working in “mission mode” under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to improve civic conditions and provide residents with a cleaner and healthier environment across the city.
