New Delhi A devastating dust storm accompanied by heavy rainfall swept through the national capital on Wednesday evening, resulting in the tragic deaths of three individuals, including a nine-year-old girl.
The victims included a 22-year-old man and a differently-abled individual. In addition, at least 11 others sustained injuries during the severe weather event.
The young girl, identified as Sahana, also known as Chandni, lost her life when an iron window panel fell from the third floor of a building. “She was promptly transported to the Civil Lines Trauma Centre, where she unfortunately succumbed to her injuries despite medical efforts,” reported a senior police officer.
Authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident, with a crime team examining the scene and documenting evidence. A case has been registered against the building’s owner. “Further inquiries are underway to determine accountability and to assess whether negligence in maintenance contributed to this tragic event,” the officer added.
In a separate incident in the Nizamuddin area of southeast Delhi, a high-beam electricity pole collapsed during the thunderstorm around 7:50 PM, crashing onto the road and striking a differently-abled man who was riding a tricycle. “He was rushed to Safdarjung Hospital, but sadly, he was pronounced dead upon arrival,” police stated, noting that efforts are ongoing to confirm his identity.
Additionally, a 22-year-old man named Azhar lost his life when a tree fell on him and two motorcycles in the Gokulpuri area of northeast Delhi around 8:15 PM.
