MCD to Deploy 2,500 Sanitation Workers for Three Months; ₹25 Lakh for Each Councillor’s Area, Says Mayor

Date:

New Delhi: MCD will deploy 2,500 sanitation workers for three months to strengthen cleanliness arrangements during the upcoming festivals, Mayor Pravesh Wahi said on Thursday. Each councillor’s area will also receive ₹25 lakh for development works, he announced after the municipal House meeting.

The temporary sanitation deployment and local works allocation put neighbourhood cleanliness and civic improvements at the centre of the mayor’s announcements. Wahi said MCD had passed several public-interest proposals despite disruptions during the meeting.

Three-month sanitation deployment for festivals

Wahi said the additional 2,500 sanitation workers would be engaged for three months in view of the festive season. The ₹25-lakh allocation would be provided to all councillors for development works in their respective areas.

He also said 1,500 sanitation employees had recently been regularised, taking their monthly pay from ₹18,500 to approximately ₹50,000.

Mayor refers House conduct to disciplinary committee

The mayor alleged that Aam Aadmi Party councillors disrupted a scheduled discussion on sanitation and air pollution, damaged government property and made an objectionable remark about a Congress councillor.

He said the matter had been referred to MCD’s disciplinary committee for action under the rules. A half-hour discussion on air pollution and sanitation had been scheduled, along with decisions concerning festive-season cleanliness, according to Wahi.

Wahi accused AAP councillors of obstructing public-interest discussions and opposing measures intended to benefit sanitation workers. These were the mayor’s allegations following the House meeting.

Yamuna projects and cow-dung-to-gas proposal

Wahi also said Union Home Minister Amit Shah had given the go-ahead that morning to projects worth ₹8,941 crore for cleaning the Yamuna.

He said Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had approved a proposal to produce gas from 6,600 metric tonnes of cow dung, and that the proposal was passed at the House meeting.

The mayor said MCD would continue to prioritise civic services and public welfare despite disagreements in the House.
