Sanjeev Khirwar Orders Sustained Pollution Enforcement as MCD Deploys 167 Sprinklers Across Delhi

Date:

New Delhi: MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar has directed zonal officers to ensure regular field inspections and strict implementation of dust-control measures as the corporation steps up road cleaning and pollution enforcement across all 12 zones of Delhi.

Khirwar said air pollution required sustained action, strict enforcement and close monitoring at every level, with coordinated and timely action aimed at tangible improvements in air quality.

MCD said identified dust-prone roads were being deep-cleaned and joint enforcement teams would act against biomass burning, dust from construction and demolition, unapproved fuels and illegal dumping of debris and garbage.

The corporation has deployed 167 water sprinklers and 40 mobile anti-smog guns on roads, with deployment linked to the different stages of the Graded Response Action Plan issued by the Commission for Air Quality Management.

Another 20 anti-smog guns have been installed at MCD facilities, including construction-and-demolition processing plants, dumpsites and waste-to-energy facilities, and 20 at MCD high-rise buildings.

MCD said designated construction-and-demolition waste disposal locations cover all 250 wards. It also reported installation of 360-degree PTZ cameras at all 125 sites, providing a direct feed to the Delhi Pollution Control Committee for round-the-clock monitoring.

The prescribed site measures include dust and wind-breaking walls at least three metres above the maximum height of material heaps, complete covering or regular wetting of materials, and fine-nozzle sprinklers across the area. Vehicles carrying debris must be covered.

Joint teams will inspect decentralised debris-storage and dumping sites. Work is also underway to bring construction-and-demolition activities within the malba portal’s monitoring framework, in line with CAQM directions.

An immediate interim provision of ₹5 lakh for each zone has been released to facilitate vehicles for enforcement teams. Vehicles assigned to Special Magistrates for litter-picker operations may also be used for enforcement wherever required, MCD said.

In separate posts on X on October 21, MCD described inspections of dust clearance and sanitation operations in Old Delhi, Kirti Nagar–Naraina and Rajouri Garden. These posts document zonal field activity alongside the citywide measures announced by the corporation.
