New Delhi: MCD has sealed three unauthorised dhobi ghats in its Old Delhi Zone as part of action against untreated wastewater entering drains and the Yamuna, the civic body said in an October 19 release.
Inspection reports found deficiencies in the operation of effluent treatment plants, permission to operate from the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), and the use of soaps and detergents meeting Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) norms, MCD said.
More action planned against non-compliant facilities
Municipal Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar directed officials to immediately close unauthorised dhobi ghats and ensure that authorised facilities comply with DPCC standards. Instructions were issued to all zonal deputy commissioners.
MCD said action against other non-compliant facilities was planned over the following days in coordination with police and the administration.
Electricity and water disconnection process initiated
Show-cause and compliance notices have been issued to defaulting operators, warning of statutory action, including sealing. The process of disconnecting electricity and water connections at establishments violating the norms has also begun, and BSES and the Delhi Jal Board have been informed, MCD said.
Khirwar directed effective enforcement and regular monitoring to prevent untreated wastewater from being discharged into drains and water bodies.
MCD asked operators to use BIS-compliant soaps and detergents, follow DPCC rules and stop releasing untreated wastewater. Residents can report unauthorised dhobi ghats to the concerned zonal office.
