New Delhi: MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar has asked officials to examine developing about 20 acres at the Okhla landfill site into an attractive theme-based park modelled on Punjabi Bagh’s Bharat Darshan Park.
The direction emerged during Khirwar’s inspection of the West Zone, where he reviewed Bharat Darshan Park, an air-quality monitoring hotspot, the Punjabi Bagh puzzle parking facility and arrangements for construction and demolition waste.
From scrap park to landfill makeover
West Zone Deputy Commissioner Colonel Vinod Atri told the commissioner that Bharat Darshan Park spans about 8.5 acres and features replicas of prominent buildings from different Indian states made from around 450 tonnes of scrap. The park was inaugurated on December 25, 2021.
Khirwar said a similar landscaped, theme-based public space should be explored on roughly 20 acres at the Okhla landfill site. The proposed use marks a wider redevelopment angle beyond the day’s pollution-control review.
Pollution sources and parking reviewed
During the inspection, Khirwar sought details on air-quality monitoring, the identification of major pollution sources and the steps being taken to control them. He also inspected the puzzle parking system and called for effective measures to reduce emissions from vehicles and cremations at the local crematorium.
The commissioner reviewed the collection, transport and disposal of construction and demolition waste. Officials were told to prevent open dumping and ensure organised disposal of the material.
Khirwar directed departments to enforce pollution-control measures, maintain regular monitoring and improve coordination. He said all agencies concerned must work actively and responsibly to prevent air pollution.
West Zone Ward Committee chairman Harish Oberoi, local councillor Suman Tyagi, Colonel Vinod Atri and senior MCD officials accompanied the inspection.
