NEW DELHI: Safer journeys to campus and safer student accommodation are at the centre of new directions issued by Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, who called for dark spots to be removed, CCTV integration along approach roads and better last-mile transport for students of Delhi government universities.
The Lieutenant Governor reviewed campus security and student safety, particularly for women students, with the vice-chancellors and directors of GNCTD universities and representatives of Delhi Police, the Public Works Department, Municipal Corporation of Delhi and Transport Department.
Official update
Safety beyond the campus boundary
In his official update, the LG directed enhanced police patrolling, elimination of dark spots, CCTV integration along approach roads and improved last-mile transport connectivity. The directions address the routes students use to reach and leave their institutions.
He also called for comprehensive safety audits of student accommodation, extending the review to places where students live.
Agencies asked to coordinate
The LG stressed coordination among the agencies involved, describing student safety and security as non-negotiable. Women students were a particular focus of the review.
The update concerns universities under the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. It sets out directions for action; it does not state that the lighting, CCTV, transport improvements or accommodation audits have already been completed.
