New Delhi, July 7: The Central Delhi District Police has arrested five accused in connection with a firing incident allegedly carried out to extort money from a builder. The operation also led to the arrest of the gang’s main accused, who was apprehended after a police encounter near IP Estate.
According to Delhi Police, the accused had allegedly been attempting to establish dominance in the area by posting videos on social media displaying firearms and issuing threats. Investigators believe the firing was part of an extortion bid targeting a local builder.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a police team laid a trap near the IP Estate graveyard to intercept the main accused. As the police attempted to apprehend him, the accused allegedly opened fire on the police team.
Police retaliated in self-defence, during which the accused sustained bullet injuries to both legs before being overpowered and taken into custody. He was shifted for medical treatment under police security.
During the course of the investigation, the police also tracked down the alleged conspiracy mastermind from Kolkata, while the remaining accused were arrested from different locations following coordinated raids.
Police recovered one pistol and two live cartridges from the possession of the accused.
Delhi Police said further investigation is underway to ascertain the full extent of the extortion network, identify additional associates, and determine whether the accused are involved in other criminal cases.
