LG Taranjit Singh Sandhu Orders Enhanced Police Deployment Around Delhi Schools, Student Hubs During Dispersal Hours

Date:

New Delhi, June 17: Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has directed Delhi Police to ensure robust and visible deployment around schools and major student congregation points across the national capital, particularly during school dispersal hours, as part of efforts to strengthen student safety and public confidence.

The direction was issued during a high-level review meeting on the implementation of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in Delhi. The meeting was attended by Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora, senior officials from the Women and Child Development Department, and the Directorate of Education.

Highlighting the need for a proactive approach towards child safety, the Lieutenant Governor instructed Delhi Police to maintain a strong presence around school premises and prominent student hubs to deter any untoward incidents and ensure a secure environment for children.

The move comes amid growing emphasis on preventive policing and enhanced security measures around educational institutions.

Sandhu also ordered a comprehensive audit of schools across Delhi to assess compliance with the provisions and guidelines of the POCSO Act. The Education Department has been directed to ensure strict implementation of child protection measures and initiate firm action against institutions found violating or failing to comply with prescribed norms.

During the meeting, the Lieutenant Governor stressed that the safety and well-being of students must remain a top priority for all government agencies and educational institutions.

He reiterated a zero-tolerance policy towards crimes against women and children, including eve-teasing, harassment and molestation.

“The safety, dignity and well-being of every student are non-negotiable. We are committed to creating a secure, fearless and protective environment for every child in Delhi,” Sandhu said in a post on social media platform X.

Officials said the enhanced deployment around schools, especially during opening and closing hours, is aimed at increasing vigilance, preventing potential threats and reassuring parents and students about their safety.

The review meeting also examined the current status of POCSO implementation in educational institutions and discussed measures to strengthen awareness, monitoring and enforcement mechanisms across the city.

The Lieutenant Governor directed all concerned departments to work in close coordination to ensure that child protection laws are implemented effectively and that Delhi’s schools remain safe spaces for students.
