MCD’s Mega Waste Operation: 250 MT Legacy Garbage Cleared from Daya Basti in Overnight Drive

Date:

New Delhi: In a first-of-its-kind initiative aimed at strengthening scientific waste management in the national capital, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has successfully carried out a large-scale overnight operation to remove 250 metric tonnes of legacy waste from inaccessible locations near Daya Basti Railway Station in the Karol Bagh Zone. The operation was executed under the guidance of Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh and the leadership of MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar, marking a significant milestone in urban sanitation efforts.

The waste clearance drive, conducted during the night to minimise public disruption, involved the lifting of accumulated legacy garbage that had remained unattended due to logistical challenges in accessing the area. In a notable move, the collected waste was transported using railway infrastructure, with the material loaded onto 10 bogie rail wagons for efficient and bulk movement. This approach not only expedited the clearance process but also reduced dependency on road transport, thereby minimising traffic congestion and associated environmental impact.

To ensure safe and environmentally responsible handling, the waste was covered with green netting during transit, preventing dust dispersion and maintaining hygiene standards. The operation required meticulous coordination between sanitation teams, logistics personnel, and railway authorities, reflecting strong on-ground execution by Team MCD.

Officials stated that the initiative is part of a broader plan to systematically eliminate legacy waste from critical and hard-to-reach urban pockets across Delhi. By adopting innovative methods and scientific practices, the civic body aims to enhance efficiency in waste disposal while ensuring environmental safeguards.

The successful execution of this operation underscores MCD’s commitment to transforming Delhi into a cleaner and greener city, with a focus on sustainable waste management and improved public health standards.
