New Delhi: A tragic incident unfolded in the Jangpura slum area where an 18-year-old youth allegedly shot his mother while showing off an illegal pistol. According to preliminary police findings, the firing occurred late at night inside the family’s residence, leading to the immediate death of the woman.
The deceased, identified as Sumati, was reportedly living in the area with her husband and three children. Police sources stated that the accused, identified as Tarun (18), had brought an unlicensed firearm and was displaying it to his mother when the weapon accidentally discharged. The bullet struck the victim in the face.
Neighbours alerted the police after hearing the gunshot. The victim was rushed to Moolchand Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead. A PCR call was subsequently made, and the police reached the spot to begin investigation.
Officials confirmed that the accused fled the scene and allegedly disposed of the firearm in a nearby drain in an attempt to destroy evidence. He was later apprehended. Police are now investigating the source of the illegal pistol and searching for the individual who allegedly supplied the weapon.
The incident has triggered concerns about the increasing availability of illegal firearms among youth in Delhi. Residents in the locality expressed fear and shock, though many were reluctant to speak on camera.
Delhi Police have registered a case and further investigation is underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
