Can ₹500 Crore End Delhi’s Parking Nightmare? MCD Floats 3 Mega Multi-Level Parking Projects

Date:

New Delhi: With Delhi grappling with an ever-growing number of vehicles and acute space constraints, traffic congestion and parking shortages have emerged as major urban challenges. In a significant move aimed at easing this pressure, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has proposed the construction of three large multi-level parking facilities at an estimated cost of ₹500 crore, seeking approval from the Delhi government.

Officials say the lack of organised parking has led to widespread illegal roadside parking, choking arterial roads and worsening traffic jams across key commercial and residential areas. The proposed projects are intended to create structured parking capacity in high-density zones and improve overall traffic flow.

Key Details of the Proposal

  • Total Project Cost: ₹500 crore
  • Number of Parking Facilities: Three multi-level structures
  • Objective: Reduce roadside parking, ease congestion, and improve mobility
  • Status: Awaiting Delhi government approval

Proposed Parking Locations

  • Idgah Road, Sadar Paharganj:
A three-storey parking facility planned at the old slaughterhouse site, with an estimated cost of ₹346 crore.
  • Rajendra Nagar:
A parking complex with basement, stilt and three floors, estimated at ₹76.6 crore.
  • Shastri Park, Karol Bagh:
Similar design to Rajendra Nagar, with an estimated cost of ₹101.7 crore.

Why the Move Is Crucial

Urban planners note that land scarcity remains Delhi’s biggest constraint in expanding parking infrastructure. While demand continues to surge, the absence of nearby parking in busy markets discourages usage of designated lots and pushes vehicles onto roads.

MCD already operates 419 surface parking sites and 30 multi-level parking facilities, with several others under construction. However, officials admit these are insufficient for a city witnessing rapid vehicle growth.

What Lies Ahead

Several additional parking projects are also under consideration across locations such as Karol Bagh, Punjabi Bagh, Rajendra Nagar, Rani Bagh and Pusa Lane, which together could add thousands of parking slots in the coming years.

Current Parking Landscape

Delhi already has operational automated and multi-level parking facilities at places like Hauz Khas, Lajpat Nagar, Chandni Chowk and Nizamuddin, while new facilities at Fatehpuri Market and Lal Qila area remain under construction.

The proposed ₹500 crore multi-level parking plan marks one of Delhi’s most ambitious attempts to tackle chronic parking shortages and traffic congestion. If approved and executed on schedule, the project is expected to significantly reduce roadside parking, improve road discipline and offer long-term relief to commuters navigating the capital’s crowded streets.
