Pickpocketing Spike in Delhi: CCTV Shows Thief Targeting Crowded Sadar Market; Suspect Arrested Next Day

Date:

New Delhi: A sharp rise in pickpocketing incidents is rattling Delhi residents, with crowded markets and public transport hubs repeatedly targeted by experienced thieves. A CCTV clip from Sadar Market — widely circulated on social media — captures a young man trailing a shopper and, after an initial failed attempt, slipping his hand into the victim’s bag and fleeing with cash within seconds.

Police registered a complaint on September 15 reporting ₹6,500 stolen from a shopkeeper. Investigators reviewed local CCTV and, acting on a tip, arrested the suspect in Paharganj on September 16. Officers recovered ₹5,200 from the accused, identified as a 21-year-old with prior cases on record. Authorities praised the quick arrest but acknowledged public concern over repeat offenders operating openly despite earlier FIRs.

Residents and civic commentators demand sustained action beyond one-off arrests: targeted drives, better CCTV coverage, community policing and fast tracking of repeat-offender cases. Delhi Police say they will continue to use footage, forensic leads and intelligence sharing to dismantle pickpocket gangs and urged citizens to report suspicious behaviour immediately.
