Karnataka | A Serpent’s Sharp Mistake: Cobra Ingests Knife in Bizarre Incident

Date:

Bengaluru: In a truly unusual event in Kumta, Uttara Kannada district, 475 kms away from India’s Silicon Valley, Bengaluru, a cobra mistook a one-foot-long iron knife for a meal, swallowing it whole and immediately facing the agonizing consequences. The incident occurred in the kitchen of farmer Govinda Nayak’s home in Hegde village, leaving his family stunned and the snake in dire straits.

The knife, having fallen from its place near the window, vanished along with the curious serpent. The family, initially hesitant to approach, soon realized the cobra was struggling, seemingly unable to digest its unusual prey.

Suspecting the worst, Govinda Nayak contacted reptile expert Pawan Nayak. Pawan confirmed their fears: the cobra had indeed swallowed the knife, with its tip lodged near the snake’s chest. Realizing the snake’s imminent demise, Pawan rushed it to veterinary assistant Advaita Bhat.

In a delicate operation that lasted over an hour, Advaita carefully extracted the knife using forceps. Miraculously, the cobra survived, sustaining only minor injuries. Pawan released the snake back into the wild, marveling at the bizarre encounter. “This is the first time I have witnessed something like this,” he exclaimed. “It’s truly astonishing. Over millions of years, these snakes have evolved, constantly adapting their digestive tracts based on their diet and its shape.” This unfortunate cobra’s sharp lesson serves as a testament to the unpredictable nature of the wild.
