Delhi: Tensile Fabric Roof at IGI Airport Collapses Due to Water Pressure

Date:

NEW DELHI: A portion of the roof at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) collapsed when a canopy gave way due to heavy rainfall. The airport authorities acted swiftly, issuing a statement to clarify that there was no structural failure and assuring the public that other areas of the terminal remained unaffected.

It is important to note that the Delhi NCR region experienced intense rainfall and thunderstorms last night. According to a statement from Delhi Airport, the collapse occurred around 2:00 AM and lasted for approximately 30 to 45 minutes during the downpour.

The statement from Delhi Airport clarifies that the incident does not affect other areas of the terminal. The airport authorities have emphasized their prompt response, mobilizing ground teams to restore normal conditions and ensure passenger safety. However, it is important to note that this particular structure was replaced just last year due to previous damage, and now, merely a year later, it has sustained further damage from rainfall. Rainfall is a natural occurrence, especially during the monsoon season, and such incidents are to be expected annually.

In a statement posted on their X profile, Delhi Airport reported that the city experienced a severe thunderstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall during the night of May 24, 2025. The area recorded over 80mm of rain, with wind speeds reaching 70–80 km/h within a brief period of 30 to 45 minutes around 2:00 AM. This sudden and intense downpour resulted in temporary water accumulation in and around Indira Gandhi International Airport, which briefly impacted operations.

Delhi: Tensile Fabric Roof at IGI Airport Collapses Due to Water Pressure

To mitigate the effects of such extreme weather conditions and prevent excessive water retention, a section of the external tensile fabric at the T1 Arrival forecourt adjusted under pressure, facilitating effective water dispersal. Importantly, there was no structural compromise or impact on other parts of the terminal.

The collapse of structures like this raises significant concerns, particularly in an airport environment where passenger safety is paramount. The membrane shed failed to withstand the water pressure, leading to its collapse.
