NEW DELHI: The Delhi government officials have been criticized for their lack of responsiveness and negligence over the past decade. PWD Minister Parvesh Verma expressed his frustration on Friday, stating that officials will be required to work hard in the field to fulfill their duties.
Verma’s decision to suspend an executive engineer was prompted by the poor condition of a drain near the Akshardham Temple in Patparganj. This action followed complaints from Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta regarding officials’ failure to address concerns raised by MLAs.
During a field inspection, Verma emphasized the need for officials to be more proactive in their roles. He acknowledged the challenges faced but stressed the government’s commitment to improving the situation. Verma highlighted the BJP government’s efforts to address the issues and ensure officials are held accountable for their actions.

Verma criticized the officials for becoming complacent during the AAP’s tenure, stating that they must be willing to work diligently to serve the public. He emphasized the importance of enhancing the capacity to treat sewage water to prevent pollution in the Yamuna River.
In addition to addressing local issues, Verma also discussed collaborating with neighboring states to address industrial wastewater flowing into the Yamuna. During his field visit, he identified drainage problems in Patparganj, particularly along NH 9 (Service Lane), also known as NH 24.

The Public Works Department (PWD) is tasked with maintaining the drains, but the current situation on the ground paints a different picture. In response, I have taken the decision to suspend the engineer responsible for this negligence. There will be zero tolerance for inefficiency, I declared.
During a recent inspection, Verma surveyed the roads and drains stretching from New Ashok Nagar Metro Station to Chilla Village in Trilokpuri, as well as the areas of the Patparganj Assembly. He discovered that the drains were in poor condition, causing inconvenience to the residents.

Immediate corrective actions were ordered to address waterlogging and hygiene concerns.
Verma emphasized the importance of maintaining Delhi’s infrastructure, stating that officials are expected to ensure its basic upkeep. He expressed disappointment in the current state of affairs and stressed the need for regular monitoring and prompt action. Verma issued a stern warning to all senior PWD officials, cautioning that failure to fulfill their duties would result in strict disciplinary measures.
Delhi deserves top-notch roads and infrastructure, and it is imperative that officers take responsibility for their roles. Those who do not adhere to their duties will be held accountable, he emphasized.
To enhance accountability, the PWD has mandated that all field officials, including junior engineers, assistant engineers, and executive engineers, conduct daily road inspections and submit reports, along with photos, through the PWD e-monitoring app.
The new enforcement measures require daily field inspections from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm, including Saturdays. Officials failing to comply with the reporting requirements will face strict consequences, as outlined in the statement.
