Turkman Gate Action Explained: Ashish Sood Says Faiz-e-Elahi Mosque Untouched, Only Encroachment Removal, 5 Arrested

Date:

New Delhi: Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood on Wednesday categorically stated that the Faiz-e-Elahi Mosque at Turkman Gate is completely safe and was not part of the demolition drive, which was carried out strictly to remove illegal encroachments surrounding the mosque in compliance with court orders.

In an official statement issued on January 7, 2026, Sood said the misinformation surrounding the action had unnecessarily disturbed public sentiment and clarified that no religious structure was targeted.

Addressing the controversy, the Home Minister said:

“I want to clearly state that the Faiz-e-Elahi Mosque is completely safe. The demolition drive was limited only to illegal commercial encroachments around the mosque, as directed by the court. There was no intention, action, or order to demolish the mosque.”

He added that obstructing lawful action carried out under judicial directions is unacceptable and will invite strict consequences.

Stone-Pelting Incident, Five Arrested

Referring to the violence that erupted during the drive, Ashish Sood described the stone-pelting incident as “extremely unfortunate.”

“Some criminal and mischievous elements resorted to violence and stone-pelting during a lawful operation. Such acts will not be tolerated. Five persons have already been arrested, and legal action is being taken against all those involved,” he said.

According to officials, the situation is now under control, with enhanced police deployment and continuous monitoring in the area.

Court-Mandated Action

The demolition was undertaken by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) following Delhi High Court directions to clear encroachments on DDA land near the mosque. Authorities stated that adequate notices and hearings had been conducted prior to the action.

Appeal for Calm

The Home Minister appealed to citizens to maintain peace and not fall prey to rumours or provocation.

“I urge all peace-loving citizens to remain calm and cooperate with the administration. Those attempting to incite unrest or take the law into their own hands will face strict legal action,” Sood said.

Administration’s Stand

Officials reiterated that the operation was legal, limited in scope, and monitored, with the sole objective of enforcing court orders and restoring public land, while ensuring the safety of religious structures.
