A New Era for Delhi’s Infrastructure: Government Vows to Improve Drainage System Before Rainy Season!

Date:

DELHI: Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and PwD Minister Parvesh Verma conducted an inspection of three major drains – Barapullah, Kushak, and Sunehri Pullah – in the national capital on Sunday. They issued strict instructions to officials to complete the desilting work before the monsoon season.

The newly formed government in Delhi is taking proactive measures to prepare for the upcoming monsoon, which historically causes waterlogging issues in various parts of the city. To prevent a recurrence of past problems, the government is closely monitoring the progress of drain cleaning operations. This hands-on approach was evident as both the LG and CM Gupta, along with PwD Minister Verma, personally inspected the drains.

Chief Minister Gupta emphasized the importance of preventing waterlogging this year and highlighted the coordinated effort between the government and administration. The LG expressed confidence that the instructions given by CM Gupta would ensure timely completion of the desilting work, ultimately benefiting Delhi residents by minimizing waterlogging issues.

In the past, blame games between the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Delhi government worsened waterlogging problems for residents. However, the new government is prioritizing coordination among agencies to expedite drain cleaning operations.

“These drains have historically been neglected by previous administrations and were never properly maintained,” stated CM Gupta.

“There was a lack of clear accountability among agencies regarding the maintenance of these drains. We have now entrusted the responsibility of desilting to the Irrigation and Flood Control Department. Our main focus is to prevent waterlogging during the monsoon season, and we are working diligently to achieve this goal. Additionally, we will be requesting regular updates from MLAs on the progress of desilting drains and managing sewage,” the CM explained.

She emphasized that Delhi’s development was haphazard, with poorly designed drains lacking proper chambers and outlets. These issues cannot be solved by merely sitting in air-conditioned rooms or hosting press conferences. Since the crack of dawn, our team has been diligently inspecting drain outlets to prevent waterlogging and ensure the well-being of Delhi’s residents.

The current drainage system is inadequate in capacity and poorly maintained, resulting in frequent waterlogging incidents. The chief minister stressed the importance of planning projects with a long-term vision, looking ahead to the next 100 years. She reiterated that the government’s top priority is the welfare of Delhi’s residents, striving to eliminate any inconveniences they may face.
