Delhi STF Nabs Notorious Gang Member After Brief Encounter in Badarpur, Semi-Automatic Pistol Recovered

Date:

New Delhi: In a major breakthrough, the Special Task Force (STF) of Delhi Police’s South-East District arrested a notorious criminal linked to the Nasir-Danish Pahalwan gang following a brief exchange of fire in the Badarpur area.

The accused, identified as Md. Saleem alias Ganja (48), sustained a bullet injury in his leg during the encounter and was immediately shifted to Safdarjung Hospital for treatment. Police recovered a semi-automatic pistol, a scooty, and four empty cartridges from the spot.

According to police, Saleem is a habitual offender wanted in more than 20 criminal cases, including burglary and theft in Delhi and adjoining areas. He also has a long criminal history, being previously involved in over 75 cases, including murder, attempt to murder, burglary, and theft.

The incident took place on the intervening night of April 3 and 4, 2026, after STF received specific intelligence about the movement of the accused near NTPC Gate No. 1, close to Notre Dame School. He was reportedly planning to commit another theft.

Acting on the tip-off, a police team laid a trap at the location. When signalled to stop, the accused attempted to flee but was cornered by the team. During the chase, he fell while taking a sharp U-turn and opened fire at the police personnel, firing two rounds.

In self-defense, police retaliated, and one bullet hit the accused in his left leg, leading to his capture.

During interrogation, police revealed that Saleem is an active member of the Nasir-Danish Pahalwan gang and was also involved in the murder of a criminal named Salim Pehlwan in Northeast Delhi, for which he had earlier served an 8-year sentence.

A case has been registered at Badarpur Police Station, and further investigation is underway.

Delhi Police officials said the operation reflects their continued efforts to curb organised crime and ensure public safety in the national capital.
