Delhi Ends 2025 on a Freezing Note as Temperatures Hit 6-Year December Low

Date:

New Delhi: Delhi witnessed its coldest December day in six years on Tuesday, as the maximum temperature plunged to 14.2°C, bringing 2025 to a bitterly cold end, according to data released by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The last time the national capital recorded a lower daytime maximum temperature in December was on December 31, 2019, when the mercury had dipped sharply to 9.4°C.

The sudden temperature drop resulted in biting cold conditions across the city, with residents experiencing a persistent chill throughout the day. Dense cold conditions gripped several parts of Delhi, disrupting daily routines and forcing people to remain indoors.

The IMD has warned that colder conditions are likely to intensify from January 3 onwards, as cold northerly winds from the Himalayan region are expected to sweep across north India, pushing minimum temperatures even lower.

Weather officials have cautioned that the cold wave may persist for the next four to five days, urging citizens—especially children, the elderly, and those with health conditions—to take necessary precautions.

With winter tightening its grip, Delhi is expected to enter the first week of 2026 under severe cold spell conditions, the IMD said.
