New Delhi: The Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) by-election dates have been officially announced, setting the stage for a heated political battle across the capital.
Nominations will begin on November 3, voting will take place on November 30, and results will be declared on December 3.
The bypolls, covering 12 municipal wards, are expected to serve as a litmus test for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has been in power in Delhi for eight months — its first return to civic governance in nearly 27 years.
BJP’s First Civic Test After Forming Government
This election is particularly crucial for the BJP as it marks the first civic contest under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s leadership.
Party strategists see the bypolls as an opportunity to consolidate their base and showcase what they call the “triple-engine government model” — Centre, State, and MCD under BJP rule.
Sources said the BJP will highlight its Yamuna River cleaning campaign, Ayushman Bharat healthcare coverage, and grand Chhath Puja arrangements as key achievements during the campaign.
Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said:
“The bypoll results will be one-sided in BJP’s favour. Delhiites have seen visible improvements in governance, public services, and cultural celebrations under our triple-engine government.”
But Challenges Loom Large for the Ruling Party
Despite confidence within the BJP, internal reports suggest mounting challenges — including unfulfilled election promises and local anti-incumbency sentiment.
In the 2023 Assembly campaign, the BJP had pledged free LPG cylinders during Holi and Diwali and ₹2,500 monthly allowances for women, both yet to materialize.
Additionally, ongoing civic issues — piles of garbage, sanitation lapses, and uncollected waste — may erode voter goodwill, particularly in North and East Delhi zones, where cleanliness has become a top civic concern.
CM Rekha Gupta’s Litmus Test in Shalimar Bagh
The by-election in Shalimar Bagh, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s own constituency, has turned into the focal point of the campaign.
Gupta, who rose from councillor to MLA to CM, faces her first direct political test since taking charge earlier this year.
“These elections will be fought entirely in the name of Rekha Gupta’s leadership and governance model,” a senior BJP functionary said.
AAP and Congress See an Opening
While the BJP aims to defend its turf, AAP and Congress view these elections as an opportunity to reclaim lost ground.
Out of the 12 wards, nine were previously held by the BJP and three by AAP.
The BJP’s immediate goal is to retain its nine wards and capture at least one of AAP’s seats to demonstrate continued momentum.
Political observers say that micro-level issues, rather than national narratives, will drive the outcome — with garbage disposal, local infrastructure, and sanitation being the top voter concerns.
