Uttam Nagar Residents Block Roads Over Overflowing Sewage, BJP MLA Faces Heat Amid Mounting Anger

New Delhi: In a fresh outburst of public anger, residents of Uttam Nagar Assembly constituency blocked the main road on Tuesday, protesting against the severe sewage overflow problem that has plagued the area for nearly four months. Locals allege that despite repeated complaints to the Delhi Jal Board and BJP MLA, no permanent solution has been provided, forcing them to take to the streets.

At Vani Vihar, where sewage water has been stagnant on roads for months, residents staged a road blockade that paralysed traffic on the crucial stretch connecting Uttam Nagar East Metro Station, Bindapur, Mahavir Enclave, Madhu Vihar, and other colonies. Commuters, especially rickshaw pullers, have been at constant risk due to hidden potholes submerged under sewage water, causing frequent accidents.

Local resident Devesh Kaushik said, “We have protested at least three times before, but every time the authorities send a small desilting machine, which only provides temporary relief. Within hours, the sewage overflows again. Worse, some officials even demand money to carry out cleaning.”

Another resident, Mukesh Verma, added, “This is not just one street’s problem. Almost every lane in Uttam Nagar is flooded with sewage water. For over six months, residents have been living in unhygienic conditions. If the authorities don’t act now, we will escalate this protest and shut down Bindapur Road completely.”

Despite visible anger, residents say no official or MLA has personally visited to inspect the situation. The protesters accused the government of neglect and apathy, warning that their agitation would intensify unless the problem is resolved.

The sewage overflow crisis highlights the infrastructure failures in West Delhi, raising questions about accountability under the BJP-led government in the capital. With daily life, health, and sanitation severely impacted, residents have vowed to continue their protests until concrete steps are taken.
