Army Deserter, Girlfriend Among Three Nabbed in ₹1 Cr Opium Smuggling Racket in Delhi

Date:

New Delhi: Delhi Police’s Special Cell has busted a high-value drug trafficking racket with the arrest of an army deserter, his girlfriend, and an accomplice for smuggling 18 kg of opium worth approximately ₹1 crore. The arrests took place on July 7 near Kalindi Kunj, officials confirmed on Friday.

The main accused, identified as 31-year-old Godhu Ram, had reportedly deserted the Indian Army nine months ago and was allegedly using his leave period to facilitate the smuggling of opium from Manipur to Delhi-NCR and Rajasthan.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Aalap Patel, the trio was intercepted in an SUV near Agra Canal Road based on a specific intelligence input. Upon searching the vehicle, police discovered 18 packets of high-grade opium hidden beneath modified floor mats. Officers also recovered a licensed 0.32 bore pistol with six live cartridges, both registered in Ram’s name.

“The vehicle was fitted with secret compartments designed specifically for discreetly transporting contraband,” said DCP Patel.

The three were taken into custody and a case was registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at the Special Cell Police Station.

Initial interrogation revealed the gang operated a well-coordinated drug supply network using personal vehicles to evade detection. The contraband was sourced from Manipur and intended for distribution across Delhi-NCR, Haryana, and Rajasthan.

None of the arrested individuals have prior criminal records, but investigators believe they are part of a larger trafficking network. Further inquiries are underway to trace the supply chain and other possible collaborators.
