Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma orders Officials to Prevent Encroachments that Hinder Water Flow

Date:

New Delhi: On Thursday, Delhi’s Minister for Irrigation and Flood Control, Parvesh Verma, called on officials to take immediate action to ensure that no encroachments obstruct the flow of water in the city’s drainage systems.

During his visit to the Mehrauli assembly constituency, Verma inspected several areas notorious for recurrent waterlogging and drainage issues.

“Our message is unequivocal: there will be no tolerance for excuses. Every department must collaborate seamlessly, and all drains must be desilted, cleared, and fully operational before the onset of the monsoon. We owe this urgency to the residents of Delhi,” Verma emphasized.

The minister assessed four critical drainage sites: near Saket Gurudwara, Dargah Mehrauli, Moti Lal Nehru Camp, and the Kusumpur Pahadi Qutub Institute Area.

Verma highlighted that the national capital’s drainage infrastructure has been neglected for over a decade, with no significant sewer-line projects initiated in the past ten years. He noted that this lack of long-term planning has exacerbated urban flooding in various parts of Delhi.

In addition, he instructed officials to complete the desilting of all five identified sites by June 15 and to establish rapid response teams to address heavy rain alerts as part of the city’s monsoon preparedness strategy.

The Delhi government has identified over 200 vulnerable drainage points throughout the city, which are being monitored weekly to ensure progress and mitigate flooding risks.
