NEW DELHI: Delhi has officially embarked on a new chapter with the establishment of a triple-engine government, following the recent elections for Mayor and Deputy Mayor. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged triumphant, with Raja Iqbal Singh elected as the new Mayor of Delhi, garnering an impressive 133 votes. In stark contrast, Congress candidate Mandeep Singh received a mere eight votes. The Congress party has extended its congratulations to the newly elected Mayor. Additionally, Jai Bhagwan Yadav was elected unopposed as Deputy Mayor.
The results of the mayoral election clearly reflect a significant lack of support for Congress, as the voting numbers illustrate. In light of this, Congress’s Deputy Mayor candidate, Ariba Khan, withdrew her nomination, paving the way for Jai Bhagwan Yadav’s unopposed election.
When asked about his priorities as Mayor, Raja Iqbal Singh expressed a strong commitment to transforming Delhi, which he described as resembling a garbage dump. He emphasized the urgent need for a cleaner city, pledging to de-silt streets, lanes, drains, and sewers to eliminate waterlogging. He also underscored the importance of maintaining parks in pristine condition, ensuring they remain green and vibrant, and vowed to work diligently towards making Delhi pollution-free.
Addressing the pressing issue of corruption, Raja Iqbal noted a troubling increase in corrupt practices within the corporation over the past two and a half years. He promised to confront this issue directly and to revitalize stalled development projects. With the Aam Aadmi Party now in the opposition, they have expressed their intention to adopt a constructive approach. Raja Iqbal urged them to prioritize collaboration over mere criticism, emphasizing that the public expects tangible results. He cautioned that failure to deliver could result in a repeat of the electoral outcomes witnessed in February.
The standing committee has experienced considerable delays over an extended period. When can we expect a decision regarding this matter? In response, the newly elected mayor, Raja Iqbal, stated, “There is no court order preventing the formation of the standing committee; the previous administration simply lacked the intention to establish it. However, I assure you that a standing committee will be formed very soon, and we anticipate that it will be in place within a month. This development will allow us to accelerate progress within the corporation.”
